These images are all from the 2010 Toronto Maple Leafs Rookie Tournament at the John Labatt Centre in London, Ontario.  Teams participating were the Leafs, Ottawa Senators, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Chicago Blackhawks.

The intent is to let a team further asses their prospects and provide some good hockey to fans. Many of the games were during the day on weekdays and not well attended – a very unusual occurrence at the John Labatt Centre (now dubbed the Budwiser Gardens, oy vey!).  I believe all the Leaf games (which were at night or on the weekend) were all sell outs – more typical of what we see with the London Knights of the Canadian Hockey League (for those who don’t know the CHL is THE premier development league for 16 – 19 year old and still feeds most of the big stars to the NHL).

Caught the afternoon game with Pittsburgh and Chicago.  Was a good opportunity to use my ‘good’ camera at an event (I usually use my point and shoot for almost all the  concert and sports images on this blog – sort of a ‘do the best with what you have’ challenge) – at that time the 50D.  It was/is rather evident how much Canon has advanced the low-light capabilities of their DSLRs!  The 50D produced many fine images for me but can’t come close to what the new 6D can do in now light!  More on that in another post…

So here are some the better/noteworthy shots:

We’ll start with a dance – Brandon Bollig & Ryan Scnell, not sure if either have had a call up to the big league as of yet (a theme that is rather common for most of these young hopefuls).

Couple of Goalies shots I liked, Blackhawk prospect Kent Simpson:

P1050403-3Hawk’s Igor Makarov & Ryan Stanton – Stanton played his first NHL game this past season (but just ONE game – that is the proverbial ‘cup of coffee’!):

Nick Leddy, who is currently making a solid contribution to the Hawk’s Cup run – note he isn’t wearing his current number 8!

Prospect Brian Connelly and Nick Leddy celebrate after a Hawk goal:

And finally an action shot with Brian Connelly and young Pittsburgh Goalie Patrick Killeen:
